Streakin’ Johnny Hard Cider in Stores Now

Von Jakob's Hard Cider

With the demand growing for our Streakin’ Johnny Hard Cider we’ve been getting it into more and more stores in the Southern Illinois area. Look for it in liquor stores, grocery stores and local bars and restaurants. If you don’t have it in a specific location you’re looking be sure to ask the store about getting it in and they should have no problem doing so.
We believe the growth in demand has been so substantial due to the ever growing popularity of hard cider in general, but also specifically for our cider due to the fact that it is a quality product made from 100% local Jonathan apples.
Note some of these stores that currently have our wines may not currently have Streakin’ Johnny available but we are working on having them available in the coming months. Please email us at info@vonjakobvineyard.com to let us know of any stores that we are not in that you’d like to see us in. Cheers!

Von Jakob's Hard Cider
Streakin’ Johnny Hard Cider
Craft Cider Gaining Momentum
Article by Chris Furnari

There’s an old Irish proverb that goes something like “when the apple is ripe, it will fall.”

If recent statistics are any indication, the time is ripe for U.S cider makers, and a hail of apples is on the way.

Sales of U.S. hard cider tripled over the five-year period from 2007-2012, reaching about $600 million, according to market-analyst firm IBISWorld. While that’s a fraction of the $10.2 billion in craft beer sales from 2012 – craft beer being the obvious analogue to cider – many of the dynamics are the same for the category and it’s starting to get even more attention, particularly as it gathers momentum among consumers.

Grape Harvest
The picking season has arrived and for the most part our annual harvest is looking bountiful. At Von Jakob we grow 5 grapes varietals: Chambourcin, Cabernet Sauvignon, Vidal Blanc, Chardonnay and Traminette. Our chambourcin and vidal blanc grape production is at its highest level in years. This can be mainly attributed to moderate temperatures and a sufficient amount of rain throughout much of the growing season. The traminette and chardonnay unfortunately were negatively effected by a late rain followed by a number of days of extreme humidity causing what is known as powdery mildew. The powdery mildew coats the leaves with a white powdery substance which inhibits photosynthesis and consequently ruins the grapes. This occurred on almost 75% of our chardonnay and traminette. Not to worry though because we have already attained a replacement crop for the traminnette from a local grape grower. Lastly, our cabernet had a very nice year producing about 75% of potential production. This loss is mainly attributed to animals feeding on them as the grapes ripen. The good news is that there will be plenty of estate grown Von Jakob wines for the coming year!

Apple HarvestVon Jakob Apple Orchards
Apple picking season is upon us! With over 5 acres of apple orchards, we will be picking our Jonathan apples in the coming weeks. The apple crop this year is shaping up to be a good one. We are extremely excited about the high quality and production of apples this season since this means that we will be able to produce more of our Johnny Apple Wine and Streakin’ Johnny Hard Apple Cider. It couldn’t have come at a more opportune time as we are going to be distributing our Double Gold winning Hard Cider in the Southern Illinois area starting in September! So look for both Southern Illinois grown and produced products in retail stores near you.

Streakin’ Johnny wins Hard Cider of the Year!Streakin' Johnny Cider of the Year
Less than a year after its initial release, Von Jakob’s Streakin’ Johnny Hard Apple Cider is already racking up awards. Von Jakob’s newest product received a trophy for the Fruit Wine of the Year, along with a Double Gold Medal and Best-of-Class Honors, at the Indy International Wine Competition held in late July. With over 2300 entries from 40 states and 15 countries, Indy International is the largest scientifically organized and independent wine competition in the United States. Fifty prestigious judges, ranging from wine writers, wine producers, enologists, chefs, retailers and consumers, came together to judge this year’s competition. Earlier in July, Streakin’ Johnny earned Best-of-Class Honors and a Silver Medal in the Illinois State Fair Wine Competition.

Wedding Season
September and October have become prime time for weddings. This can likely be attributed to the milder temperatures and beautiful colors that accompany the late summer and early fall. One thing is for certain we have been busy during this wedding season. With five consecutive weddings and five more on the books for the month of October, we are in the thick of it. More than likely we can attribute our busy wedding season to a few things. We’ve got over 15 years of experience hosting weddings and have hosted more than 300 during this time. Additionally, there can be so much stress involved in wedding planning, but our expert wedding coordinator is there to guide you every step of the way and alleviate the pressure that goes along with wedding planning. We also have seasoned in-house chefs who can prepare items currently available on our robust menu, in addition to almost anything else you have in mind. At Von Jakob we pride ourselves on going above and beyond to ensure your wedding is an event to remember.

Von Jakob is GREEN!
For years now we’ve been recycling our wine bottles in order to cut down on waste. We decided many years ago that we would do our part on reducing waste by taking on this challenge. We now take the time to hand wash on average around 40,000 bottles per year that would have otherwise ended up in the trash.
Most recently we decided to continue our Green Initiative as we have now incorporated into our lunch service compostable plates and utensils made from sugar cane and bamboo respectively. This not only creates less waste but it dramatically decreases the amount of energy and water consumed. We look forward to looking into ways to continue our Green Initiative and will keep you updated as we proceed.

Frank grew up on a farm in Southern Illinois, and has been around agriculture his whole life.  While attending SIUC to obtain a B.S. in Geographic Information Science, Frank took a class pertaining to grape growing and wine making that sparked a huge interest in fruit growing and most especially in fermentation science.  This led to a part-time job with Von Jakob in the beginning of 2010.
Frank is absolutely fascinated by yeast and fermentation. His first homemade wine was over 5 years ago, and his first home-brewed beer was shortly made after. Countless hours of reading, studying and hundreds of gallons of home-brew later, Frank has become the Head Brewer at Von Jakob Brewery.
“My favorite thing about working at Von Jakob is definitely production.  I have always liked working with my hands and have been interested in science and technology.  Beer production combines all those things in a way that allows someone to be able to enjoy the final product.”

Streakin’ Johnny Hard Apple Cider Wins “Fruit Wine of the Year”

Press Release:

Streakin’ Johnny Hard Apple Cider Wins “Fruit Wine of the Year”

August 7, 2013

Paul Jacobs, owner of Von Jakob and maker of the hard cider states, “Customer response to Streakin’ Johnny at the winery confirmed to us that this product is competitive with most available ciders. I feel our awards to date confirm what our customers have said.”

Streakin’ Johnny Hard Cider was named after John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, who helped introduce apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois in the early 1800s. “Streakin’” is derived from a hint of oak added to increase complexity, a process known as “wine streaking.” Jacobs combined these two principles to come up with the playful name of Streakin’ Johnny Hard Apple Cider, which is depicted in the label with a streaking Johnny Appleseed with only an oak barrel covering him. The flavor profile of the hard cider is crisp, clean and refreshing with just a bit of sweetness. With a product like Streakin’ Johnny, it is easy to see why the hard cider industry is the fastest growing industry in the beverage world. Von Jakob hopes that the future will be bright for their newest product, as production has amped up in preparation for distribution throughout the Southern Illinois market coming early Fall.
